Current project: "shades of grey", MMMcLeod, pen & ink, 2010

Shades of Grey, MMcLeod, 2010
Dedicated to Stan McLeod, 26 Jan 1942-30 Sept 2010

This pen and ink series is an exploration in 'stream of consciousness drawing'. The
title, 'shades of grey' refers to the monotone colour (only differentiated by shade) and the refusal of the images to exist within one reading. There is always more than one thing happening at a time..

The 'dd' series is dedicated to my father who was fighting a battle with Acute Myloid Leukemia during the time they were created. I drew them for him and hope he enjoyed exploring them.

about the work

Since starting this series I have noticed that my work is getting less 'controlled' (a complete idea) and more free (random ideas/images working off each other). I have always been a fan of the surrealists and their explorations of the unconscious. Although I start doodling without a plan, I am finding that images of my father's sickness are often popping up, ie. candles, golf, vein-like lines. Does art come from the head or the heart?
